Focusing on Christmas, f/4.5 focused at 1 ft.,1/60 shutter and a focal length of 35mm and clear filter. This was one of my favorites from an assignment working to achieve a shallow depth of field. What I most like about it is what it most readily and easily conveys, Christmas! I'd like to think that within each of us lives a fond sentiment that Christmas conjures, at least it does for me. I find the image completely simple, yet completely complete.
Tools of the Trade,f/3.5 focused at 2.4 ft., 1/44 shutter and a focal legnth of 18mm and clear filter. These are the various tools that a farrier will be very familiar with. For those who don't know, a farrier is an individual trained in the skills of trimming and shoeing the hooves of horses and mules. I thought the decade of use of most of the idems included illustrated a certain longevity and character to what use to be very shiny, smooth surfaces. I also felt an arrangement of my tools might make a simple, but effective advertisement for my services. I might have submitted this photo minus my business card, but failed to get a shot without one. I just didn't feel the assignment called for such a commercial feel.
Christmas Cabin, f/4.5 focused at 1 ft., 1/1000 shutter and a focal length of 35mm and clear filter. This is another in the shallow depth of field series. The Christmas photos were taken of my mother's decorated tree. She has compiled a number of sentimental and personal ornaments that she enjoys having on her tree. Apparently, it brings her so much joy that she leaves her tree up year round. I personally enjoy the natural products used to make most of her decorations.
Mater Meets A Cousin, f/5 focused at 1.5 ft., 1/600 shutter and a focal length of 50mm and clear filter. I'm a hopelessly rediculous Disney fan. I thought it might be whimsical to use the wide-eyed excited expression of Tow Mater to play out my idea. The very out of focus truck in the background is mine. I think everyone can tell it's a truck, but because it was so dirty, I decided to make sure that part wasn't discernible.
Pillars of Athletics, f/32 focused to infinity, 1/20 shutter and a focal length of 50mm and clear filter. One of the reasons I liked this shot is that as a physically active individual, it represented sports that I've participated in and/or enjoy spectating. Another reason I like it is simply because I was able to capture it without students being in view. Having the space to myself gave me the feeling of walking into stadium where I could specify the sport experience I wanted to have by touching an image and being transported into the competition.
Converging Oaks, f/3.5 focused to infinity, 1/400 shutter and a focal length of 18mm. With this shot I was hoping to capture the fullness of the tree's canopy of leaves that their trunks disappeared into. The vertical, column-like structure of the trunks lended themselves to a fairly convincing natural corridor that envites the viewer to choose a side, and explore.
Hallowed Ground, f/6.3 focused to 32 ft., 1/200 shutter and a focal length of 200mm and 1/4 filter. With this shot I simply attempting to create depth in seperating the subject from foreground and background. I plan to attenpt this shot during the early morning, or late evening or both to increase intrinsic interest. What made this particular tombstone interesting to me is the very apparent age it shows over the other graves. One gets the sensethat if it could talk, all long and insightful history would ensue.
Bark Up the Wrong Tree, f/13 focused to 2ft., 1/400 shutter and a focal legnth of 35mm and a 1/16 filter. Honestly, I rather favor the feel of a worn country roadeway past an inline planting of trees leading onto the farmstaed it connects to. The only problem was that I didn't recognize that part of the composition until after I was home. Yhis is essentially a depth of field shot, but would be greatly enhanced if I had taken it as deep depth of field.

This is the link to my edited short. If there is a way to upload full videos of this size, I've not found how. This was a fun and challanging short to film. However, I learned a great deal about the logistics to filming to tell the viual story you're trying to communicate.
